• Movie Review: Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen



     

    Jane Austen was born in 1775 to an Anglican clergyman and his wife; Jane was the second youngest of eight children. When she was eleven, Jane started writing plays and novels, mostly social satires and parodies. Thorough Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen examines what life was like for middle-class woman in 19th century.

    The role of women around the middle of the 18th century in Europe are totally different to the way it is today. The 18th and the 19th century can be considered as the era of gender inequality. It is believed that women are not capable of rational though. Many female writers publish their work anonymously. Basically, women literature is not taking seriously if not written by men. Society often expect women to be submissive, beautiful, passive, powerless, self-sacrifice as a perfect standard. In many of her novel Jane Austen confess that she didn't like the way women are treated in her era. Pride and Prejudice portray Elizabeth Bennet as a brave character that different from the other women in common. When most of the women in her time just accepting their fate, the character of Elizabeth stands out as one of the best female protagonists. Jane Austen's heroine always give voice to the various women whose circumstances were typical during that period

    The object of this research is a novel by Jane Austen entitled Pride and Prejudice which was first published in 1813. It’s a social satire about a family with five daughters. It carries the theme of attitudes toward money, class and gender. Thorough Pride and prejudice, Jane Austen examines what life was like for middle-class woman in 19th century. The role of women around the middle of the 19th century in Europe are totally different to the way it is today. The 18th and the 19th century can be considered as the era of gender inequality.

    Many Film are created from the product of adaptation from a literary works such as drama text, short story and novel. We should understand that novel and movie are different media of communication. The medium of writing a novel is paper while the media of making movie is screen and camera. Movie has different media in delivering a message from literary works. The result of movie adaptation can be different from the original works so that many changes happen. Some of movie adaptation does not match with the hope of the audiences due to the misunderstanding in accepting the message which is delivered from a novel to the movie and vice versa.
